Rotterdam in Pictures

Welcome to the home town of the Van Krevelen ancestors

Be my guest! This visual tour through Rotterdam is for all my family overseas: history, facts, guided tours and of course loads of pictures. Enjoy!

Why these pages?

When I met Jean Ann Van Krevelen on the 'Net', she asked me about Holland and of course about Rotterdam, the city of the Van Krevelen ancestors. What's that city like? What's it like to live there? I could have given a brief description by mail of the things that come to mind right then and there, but that always leaves me with the feeling that I've left out too much, and that I should have added one more little detail... and of course a city like Rotterdam can hardly be captured in words, at least not by me. What I really wanted was something that I could show someone and say: "Look, this is Rotterdam. This is how people are living over there."
That's why these pages are created. They're primarily intended to give my 'Family overseas' a general impression of Rotterdam. I've included some general background, a little history, a few trivia... and of course as many pictures as the traffic will bear. Even so, these pages can only show a few of the many highlights that make Rotterdam the special city that it is. So be it. There are limits to what one can do with a few words and images to describe a city that has a thousand faces. Of course, nothing beats finding out for yourself. So feel free to come over and see the sights!

Your tour guide

At the top of these pages you'll find a (clickable) list of subjects. Some areas may partially overlap, i.e. discuss similar subjects or refer to similar pictures, but that's what hyperlinks are for. The facts section tries to give some general background information about Rotterdam and how it came to be the city that it is. The 'Randstad & Rijnmond' section discusses the Randstad area (the large urban and industrial region that Rotterdam is part of). There's a section about the port of Rotterdam, because that deserves its own chapter. There's the sightseeing tour, with pictures that takes you through the city and shows a few of its highlights. And of course a list of hyperlinks to other Rotterdam-related web sites (some in English, some in Dutch).

You can also jump to the previous or next page by clicking the finger icons at the bottom of each page.
The pictures used in these pages have been reduced in size. To see the fullsize image, point-and-click on the small picture. Caveat Netizen: some images are rather large (1000x800 pixels or more) and may take a long time to load.
Is there something else you would like to know? Ask for it and we'll see what can be worked out.
